THE REFUGEE CRISIS IS BIGGER THAN YOU THINK

That striking number fails to capture the magnitude of suffering attached to so many war-torn hometowns. “Statistics are human beings with the tears dried off,” says UN spokesperson Melissa Fleming. She spoke on the latest episode of Explorer.

Jason Cone, who works with the medical aid group Doctors Without Borders, also appeared on the show. He notes that for every international staffer in his group’s force of 34,000, nine locals are hired in countries such as Syria, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic. Here, Cone talks more about the unprecedented crisis the world now faces.
